Because I put this up at an awkward time, and I’m really interested in hearing what you think about me.

((Since I’m feeling sick, and can’t really concentrate on being creative, I decided to take what moments I could to try drawing with smoother lines. And since I saw some centaur posts before I fell ill, I was tempted to draw my take on them.
So far I can manage the lines, but I’m not entirely efficient, or comfortable about the result. I might have to work with brush weights and tools in SAI, but in order to get a hold of the feel of the method, this is good enough.))

Because I have a tendency to put the human Partway drawings here.

Just because she’s bodiless, it doesn’t mean she’s defenceless.
Don’t try waking her up without warning.

This is a blog that I’d really like to promote. It’s sort of a hub of modular ponies run by my friend Airship King: two universes already exist (bodiless Dash and the modular universe) inside it, and more will come. It’s a pretty unique approach to an ask blog, one which I haven’t seen before.
Also, I’m pretty fond of the shading on that cloud. It’s a pretty cloud.

What you're doing there with your lines, building them out of several shorter strokes, is known as "petting" your lines, and for an artist its a pretty bad habit to get into. Typically comes from a tendency toward perfectionism and a lack of confidence. It feels like a safe way to avoid mistakes, but it slows you to a crawl, makes your lines look like they need a shave, and forces you to work so much harder than you should just to draw a line. Definitely worth a read about these "hairy" lines!

I can certainly agree… except for the part where it’s a pretty bad habit. Some artists have adapted to use them to exaggerate their work, like Tracymod. However, for me, smoother lines is definitely what I should be doing, since my lineart takes ages to do.

The problem is how, though. What can I do to transition from petting to solid lines? I can’t just jump ship - sudden changes don’t really work for me, and my motivation and creativity wane when it comes to random purposeless drawing. I need some sort of middle ground: a mix of smooth lines and petting to gradually transition between the two methods of drawing lines.

Rick and Morty… it’s a pretty good show, Rick and Morty… a pretty good show. It’s got sci-fi and BRUUURRRRRRPventrures - you know how you like adventures. And it makes you think - it makes you think about life.
So I decided to see what Rick would look like in my style (or lack thereof).
But really, go and watch the show. It’s got some mature themes (and some immature ones too), but if you can stand those, you’re golden.

Hmm... what method are you using for drawing your lines? Looks kinda interesting.

These are the settings I currently use, as they’ve helped a lot towards colouring (magic wand set on “Transparency (Strict)”, then fill). Then, to actually draw the lines, I do small strokes to gradually extend a line or curve while on stabiliser setting 5. It ends up a little messy, but as I’ve noticed lately, adding shading goes a long way towards hiding it.

Though these aren’t the final settings I’ll use. An artist grows and develops their skills, and with that how I draw my lines will change, whether it be through personal experimentation or outside criticism/suggestion. But for the moment, this works well for me.
